By that we mean that it is cultivated under a natural coffee production regime that maintains high shade tree species diversity with no use of chemicals that are harmful to the local ecosystems, coffee workers or human consumption. It is grown by a small coffee grower that cultivates his coffee trees under a truly rustic shaded, “Coffee Garden” forest environment. He strives to maintain a minimum of 40% forest shade cover with several canopy layers of native tree species.
Shaded coffee plantations are second only to primary tropical forests for bird species diversity! There are over 200 species of migratory birds that visit Central America every year. Many of them are songbirds such as thrushes, tanagers, vireos and warblers, although there are also raptors as well as sandpipers, terns and plovers and a few species of waterfowl. Coffee Gardens provide these birds with a thriving natural habitat.
Our Dota Tarrazu Eco-friendly coffee is produced by a group of 8 "small" farmers who are zealous to help other coffee growers and small mills to have better access to the coffee market.
