Our Tarrazu Maleku Reserve coffee grows on the High Mountain slopes within the Leon Cortés cantón of Costa Rica's famous Tarrazu coffee region. It is a flawless gourmet, sustainably grown coffee. Grown on fertile volcanic soils at 5,000 feet above sea level, this coffee is enhanced by natural nutrients and minerals. It is grown on small farms and picked by hand, wet processed, using ecological methods that limit water use and contamination to local streams, and then carefully dried. The result is a wonderful Tarrazu strictly-hard-bean of the highest quality.
The Tarrazu Maleku Reserve is a mild, sweet coffee with that special highland coffee acidity, slightly heavy and rich in body, uniform and clean cup, with nice aromatic complexity and pronounced chocolate notes. A wonderfully superior and pleasant coffee of world reputation. It is excellent black, but also impressive with milk or cream, which further develops the chocolate tones.
In this case we don't mean what roasting companies normally mean by a "reserve" coffee. Instead, we literally mean Maleku Reserve. This coffee is dedicated to help the Maleku Indian Tribe of Costa Rica restore tribal control over their historic tribal lands and to reforest the reservation that has been totally deforested by peasant farmers who squatted on tribal lands after the reservation was established. We are committed to working hand in hand with the Maleku Tribal leaders to restore their lands to its original beauty.
For every bag of our Tarrazu Maleku Reserve we will give two dollars to help the Maleku Indians permanently restore tribal ownership to their lands that have been legally set apart by the Costa Rican government, but never purchased and thereby leaving the Indian in control of less than 10% of the reservation.
Green Earth Coffee through its non-profit partner, Green Earth Development Teams, is working directly with tribal leaders to help them obtain international market access for selling their extraordinarily beautiful indigenous arts and crafts. Maleku artisans have formed a cooperative network of family artisans and have agreed to contribute 10% of their own profits to buying the reservation. Check out our Maleku Indian fair-traded arts and crafts on our online store.
